CYRIL TARA, NOT A GOOD GUIDE FOR SEPIK RIVER AREA, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
I want to share my experience in order to avoid other travelers have the same problems. Cyril Tara from the village of Kamindimbit – who is quoted in the Lonely Planet guidebook for Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands in the Sepik River section - is a completely dishonest person. It was not easy to find a local guide because few of them have a website or an email (most just have a phone) and the best organized ones, usually company owned/co-owned by Westerners, are really expensive. Me and my three travel companions got in touch with him and other local tour guides via email and discussed the itinerary and the cost of our trip along the Sepik River. Cyril Tara had good prices and was quite quick in replying to our email, so we picked him among few others. The itinerary we discussed and approved was a 8 days trip on the Middle and Upper Sepik. The total price agreed was 6,400 kina total (2,065€ total, 516€ each), everything included: transfers, fuel, food, accommodations, activities with the locals and guiding services. The only thing that was not included were possible tips to take picture to people with "crocodile scarifications".
When we arrived in Wewak he came to pick us up at the airport, brought us to the guest house he booked for us and we told him that one of our travel companion changed his mind about the trip (because of budget problems) so we were only three people traveling the river instead of four. We asked him to quote us the new price and he said 5,000 kina total (1612€ total, 537€ each), then we went to the ATM to get the money to pay him. When we were going to pay him he said the total price was 5,800 kina and that we didn’t get what he said. To avoid further discussions we paid what asked and he left the guest house, telling us he’d be back the following morning at 8:00/8:30. The morning after, at 9:00 we started calling at the phone but he was not answering. At last, after maybe ten attempts, he replied saying the van had problems with the tyres and he was on the way. He came at 9:30 and the tour started. We reached Pagwi with a private van where a dugout canoe was waiting for us. When there he advised us of a change of itinerary: he said that his wife had a health issue and asked us to change the itinerary, sleeping the first night in Kamindimbit instead of Palimbe, then going to Wagu and Swagup at the end of the tour. We accepted the change because we believed what he told us about his wife health but we never see her and we believe it was a lie. On the way to Kamindimbit we visited the Haus Tambaran of Kanganaman where we met some young local with the scarifications. After having spent the night in his guest house, Cyril told us that he was not going to come with us because of his wife problems and that a local guide named J (I’m not going to spread his name because I think it’s not responsible for what happened to us) would have replaced him for the rest of the trip.
We reached Wagu and slept in the local guest house. The morning after we watched the birds of paradise in the nearby forest. We were expected to do some other activities in the village but J. told us that there was absolutely nothing else to do/see in the village (and Cyril didn't told us about this), they didn’t even have an haus tambaran to visit so we decided to go to Swagup earlier. After J. talked at the telephone for several minutes, I guess with Cyril, he told us we had not enough money for the rest for the trip, and it was the first day we were travelling! Later in the afternoon we reached Swagup. The village was almost empty, only women and kids were at the village, except for four elder men. We have been told that every adult man and boy was in Pagwi to buy some new canoe and that they could be back in a week. Again, no arrangement at all. We asked for an accommodation: they wanted 50K for a homestay or 20K for a room in the school. We had to choose the school because we were short of money and in the night our food was “attacked” by mice. J told us that we had no more money for accommodations and that Cyril told him that we agreed that we were going to pay for every activities (completely false!) but it was not possible to talk to him at the telephone because the village was not covered. We had no other choice than coming back. We moved from Swagup to Ambunti were it was possible to call Cyril: I told him that we were forced to stop our trip after only 5 days because he gave not enough money to J and that if he will not come to the guest house in Wewak to give us back part of the money, we would have reported to the local Police. He said he was sorry and used again the excuse of his wife health issues. After a transfer to Korogo village (where the father of the canoe driver was kind enough to host us for free in a his guest house), the following morning we reached Pagwi where we find a local truck to Wewak and we had to pay for it (Cyril didn’t give enough money not only for accommodations but even to return to Wewak). In Wewak we didn’t hear from Cyril so I sent him a message via whatsapp saying him he’s a liar and a dishonest person but he never replied, so I wrote him I’m going to spread the voice about his behavior with us. When talking about our experiences, some local people confirmed us that this kind of behavior is not new to Cyril. Before leaving I found a post on Tripadvisor where a traveler called him a “hustler” but what he did with us was definitely worst. Be aware of this “guide”.

Voglio condividere la mia esperienza per evitare che gli stessi problemi capitino ad altri viaggiatori. Cyril Tara del villaggio di Kamindimbit – che viene segnalato nella sezione riservata al fiume Sepik sulla guida della Lonely Planet per Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands (in inglese) - è un personaggio assolutamente da evitare. Non è facile trovare delle guide sia perché non molti dispongono di un sito o di un indirizzo di mail (molti sono contattabili solo telefonicamente e questo non è il massimo per chi vive in un paese con 8 ore di fuso orario e vuole qualcosa di scritto che certifichi gli accordi) e i meglio organizzati, di norma società gestite o co-gestite da occidentali, chiedono cifre davvero proibitive. Io e i miei compagni di viaggio l'avevamo contattato, assieme ad altre guide locali, per un preventivo di un tour lungo il fiume Sepik. Cyril Tara ci aveva fatto dei buoni prezzi ed era abbastanza veloce nel rispondere alle mail così abbiamo ritenuto di affidarci a lui. L'itinerario che avevamo discusso e approvato era di 8 giorni nel Medio e l'Alto Sepik. Il prezzo totale pattuito era di 6.400 kina total (pari a 2.065 €, cioè 516 € a testa), tutto incluso: trasporti, carburante, cibo, pernottamenti, attività sul posto e il servizio di guida. L'unica cosa esclusa erano eventuali mance per le foto agli uomini con le scarificazioni.
All'arrivo a Wewak Cyril ci è venuto a prendere all'aeroporto e ci ha portato alla guest house dove aveva prenotato e gli abbiamo detto che uno dei nostri compagni di viaggio non avrebbe preso parte al tour per motivi di budget e quindi che ci dicesse il prezzo da pagare alla luce di questo cambiamento. Lui ci ha detto 5.000 kina in totale (cioè 1612 €, 537 € a testa) e quindi siamo andati in banca a cambiare/ritirare il denaro necessario per pagarlo. Quando siamo tornati alla guest house e abbiamo cominciato a contare i soldi, ha detto che avevamo capito male e la cifra era 5.800 kina. Per evitare di intavolare l'ennesima trattativa, abbiamo accettato e, presi i soldi, Cyril se n'è andato dandoci appuntamento all'indomani alle 8:00/8:30. Non vedendolo arrivare, alle 9:00 abbiamo cominciato a chiamarlo al telefono, ma non rispondeva. Alle 9:30, dopo circa una decina di telefonate, ha risposto dicendo che aveva avuto dei problemi con una gomma e stava arrivando. Abbiamo raggiunto Pagwi con un mezzo privato e poco prima di partire con la canoa Cyril ci ha avvisato di un cambiamento di programma: sua moglie aveva un problema di salute e quindi ci ha chiesto se potevamo andare a Kamindimbit (il suo villaggio) invece che a Palimbe, da cui poi andare a Wagu e a Swagup, in pratica invertendo l'ordine delle visite. Abbiamo accettato perché abbiamo creduto a quanto ci ha detto a proposito della moglie che però non abbiamo mai visto e abbiamo il sospetto che fosse tutta una montatura. Sulla strada per Kamindimbit abbiamo visitato il villaggio di Kanganaman dove c'erano anche dei giovani con le scarificazioni. Giunti a Kamindimbit abbiamo passato la notte nella sua guest house (quindi qui non ha dovuto pagare ad altri il nostro pernottamento, come invece avrebbe dovuto fare se fossimo andati a Palimbe). La mattina dopo Cyril ci ha avvisato che non poteva venire con noi causa il problema della moglie e che ci avrebbe affidato a J. (un'altra guida di cui non faccio il nome perché non credo sia colpevole di quanto ci è successo) per il prosieguo del viaggio.
Abbiamo raggiunto Wagu e abbiamo pernottato nell'unica guest house locale. Il mattino seguente all'alba abbiamo fatto la prevista escursione per vedere i locali uccelli del paradiso. Quando siamo tornati abbiamo fatto colazione e poi ci siamo resi conto che non c'era nulla da fare o da vedere nel villaggio, non c'era nemmeno una Casa degli Spiriti, cosa di cui Cyril non aveva fatto cenno. A questo punto abbiamo deciso di andare a Swagup prima del previsto. J. ha fatto una lunga telefonata, presumibilmente con Cyril, poi ci è venuto a dire che non c'erano abbastanza soldi per i successivi pernottamenti, nonostante fossimo appena al primo giorno! Nel pomeriggio abbiamo raggiunto il villaggio di Swagup, scoprendo che era praticamente mezzo vuoto: tutti gli uomini e i ragazzi si erano recati altrove (sembra a Pagwi per comprare delle nuove canoe) e non sarebbero tornati prima di una settimana, al villaggio erano rimasti solo donne e bambini, a parte quattro anziani. Di nuovo, siamo stati mandati allo sbaraglio: nessuna organizzazione, nessuno sapeva che saremmo arrivati, per di più J non era mai stato prima in questo villaggio e non conosceva nessuno. Abbiamo chiesto dove passare la notte e uno degli anziani ci ha detto che potevamo dormire presso una famiglia per 50 kina oppure nella scuola (non utilizzata) per 20 kina. Abbiamo dovuto scegliere la seconda opzione perché J non aveva i soldi per la prima. Durante la notte le nostre riserve di cibo sono state "attaccate" dai topi. La mattina seguente, vista l'impossibilità di fare attività in loco sia perché assenti gli uomini e sia perché senza soldi, abbiamo chiesto spiegazioni a J il quale ci ha detto che Cyril gli aveva detto che le attività non erano comprese e che ce le saremmo dovute pagare noi, in barba agli accordi scritti che avevamo. Volevamo parlare con Cyril ma nel villaggio non era possibile telefonare. Non abbiamo avuto altra scelta che andarcene e abbiamo sceso il fiume fino ad Ambunti, dove abbiamo chiamato Cyril. Gli abbiamo detto che ci vedevamo costretti a interrompere il viaggio dopo soli 5 giorni e che l'avremmo aspettato a Wewak perché ci restituisse i soldi dei giorni di tour a cui avevamo dovuto rinunciare. Ha chiesto scusa per i contrattempi adducendo ancora una volta la scusa della moglie malata e gli abbiamo detto che se non si sarebbe fatto vivo l'avremmo denunciato alla Polizia. Non essendo possibile tornare a Wewak in giornata, abbiamo pernottato nel villaggio di Korogo, dove il padre del pilota della canoa è stato così gentile da farci pernottare nella sua guest house senza chiederci nulla. Il giorno seguente siamo partiti all'alba e giunti a Pagwi abbiamo preso un camion locale (che abbiamo dovuto pagare visto che Cyril non aveva dato nemmeno quei soldi alla guida) e siamo tornati a Wewak. A Wewak Cyril non si è mai fatto vivo e io gli ho scritto via whatsapp che era un disonesto e che avremmo fatto sapere a tutti che tipo di truffatore era. Parlando delle nostre disavventure, qualcuno dei locali ha confermato che Cyril non era la prima volta che tirava di queste fregature ai suoi clienti. Prima di partire avevo trovato un commento su Tripadvisor che parlava di lui in termini poco lusinghieri ma quello che ha fatto con noi è stato molto peggio. State alla larga da questo truffatore.
